William G. Riley, 77, of Barnegat, NJ passed peacefully at home on Friday, November 18, 2022, after a long illness. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Alice Randall-Riley, sisters, Elizabeth Eisenmenger of St. Johns, FL and Julia Kupas of Cumberland, MD; his extended family, Linda Randall of Parsippany, NJ, Don Randall of Clifton, NJ and Bill Randall of Tucson, AZ; fourteen nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
Originally from Clifton, Bill resided the woods of Budd Lake for 30 years before moving to Barnegat.
He joined the US Army at the age of 17 and served in Vietnam. Bill was a member of the American Legion Post 232, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10092, both of Barnegat. He was also a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. After serving his country, Bill worked for Verizon for 36 years and retired as a manager.
Bill was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was proficient in the use of firearms and was an active member of SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) and the Jackson Hole Gang where he was known as “Barnegat Bill”. He won the State Championship for his age group at the 2021 “Purgatory of the Pines” shooting competion.
Bill was also an advocate for animal rescue throughout his life. As a pet therapy volunteer, Bill worked with his potbelly pigs at hospitals, nursing homes, and disabled children’s facilities for over 15 years.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, from 10 AM to 1PM with Military Honors to be conducted 12 PM at the Barnegat Funeral Home, 841 West Bay Ave., Barnegat, NJ (www.BarnegatFH.com).
