Valentina Bilaitis Smela, May 4, 1934 - May 10, 2025, passed away peacefully at home, her devoted loyal husband of 62 years, Ted by her side.
Val is survived by Ted, children Paul and spouse Robin, Diane, and David and spouse Michele. Grandchildren Teddy, Thomas, Clara and Charlie. Sister Eleanor Ditchkus and nieces, Lori, Judy, Jennifer, Jeannie, Teresa, Maryann, Debra, Joanne and Nephew Stephen. Val is predeceased by her parents George and Albina Bilaitis, sister Vida Williamson, and brother Albie Bilaitis.
Born in Lithuania, Val emigrated to Kearny, Nw Jersey at the age of 13 after spending three years in a German refugee camp. Her family fled Lithuania after Russian forces invaded her homeland. After high school graduation, Val worked at secretarial jobs before marrying Ted in 1962. She helped in his candy store in Newark until the family moved to Hillside where she raised her three children. Val and Ted retired in Barnegat where she lived until her passing. Val enjoyed needlecraft, travel, the beach, carousel horses, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025 from 4 to 7 PM at Barnegat Funeral Home, 841 West Bay Ave., Barnegat, NJ. Mass offered Friday, 9:00 AM at St. Mary's Church, Barnegat. Interment to follow in Bg. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Vet. Mem. Cem., Arneytown, NJ. (www.BarnegatFH.com)
