Peter E. Hender, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on October 17, 2024. He had resided in Barnegat, NJ since 2007.
Born March 11, 1946 in Elizabeth, NJ, to George and Maude (Snowden) Hender, Peter spent his early years in Union, NJ. The family moved to Moorestown, NJ when he was in fourth grade, and he enjoyed a wonderful childhood there, and on Long Beach Island, with his brother and many friends. He would always say that the best job of his life was being a lifeguard for nine years in Ship Bottom and Harvey Cedars. During his time as a guard, he saved two hundred people. LBI was the place he loved to be, and he was lucky to share a family home there for forty-four years.
He graduated from Moorestown High School, Bucknell University, and Rutgers Law School. In 1971 Peter married Susan Rinehart, known as his “bride”, whom he had met on LBI. They raised their two sons, Matthew and Scott, in Moorestown, where they resided for thirty-six years.
During this time, Peter pursued a career in consumer finance, beginning at United Jersey Bank, where he developed HELOC, which created thousands of jobs and provided customers access to additional credit through the value of their home. At Provident Bank, he created the legal standard for nationwide ATM machines access. He also established the simple interest calculation method used in consumer loans, making it fairer to the customer, and he was instrumental in developing the first plain language loan products. He served as an elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church for many years.
Peter first and foremost enjoyed spending time with his family, especially fishing, boating and traveling. He was always a proud supporter of his sons’ and grandchilden’s activities. Developing an interest in finance and investing at a young age, he spent many hours researching and building his portfolio. As a licensed ham radio operator, Peter connected with operators in over 100 countries around the world. He was known for his quirky sense of humor and passionate love of the Beatles. He and Susan were regular theatergoers in Philadelphia.
Peter is survived by his loving wife Susan of 53 years, his sons Matthew (Tracy) of Marmora and Scott (Nicole) of Annandale, in whom he took great pride, and five wonderful grandchildren-Kara, Ryland, Morgan, Colby and SJ, who will miss their Poppy dearly. He also leaves behind his brother Gig Hender (Mary Jane), sister-in-law Kathleen Paderson (John), a nephew and two nieces.
A Celebration Of Life will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024, 10:30 am at Barnegat Funeral Home, 841 West Bay Ave, Barnegat, NJ 08005.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter’s memory may be made to Forked River Presbyterian Church, 131 N Main St, Forked River, NJ 08731 (please add Hunger Action Team to the memo line), or World Central Kitchen.
