Olav Larsen Obituary

Olav Johan Larsen, 80, of Waretown, died Friday at home. He was a telephone lineman for 40 years before retiring from Verizon in 2001. Born in Glasgow, Scotland during World War II, Larsen was raised in Bergen, Norway. At the age of 15, he joined the Norwegian Merchant Marines and traveled by sea to almost every continent. In 1962, he immigrated to the United States and settled in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1964 and served as a medical corpsman until he was honorably discharged from active duty in 1966. He married Janet Fawcett later that year. After starting a family, the couple moved to Waretown in 1974, where Larsen was a member of Barnegat American Legion Post 232 and the Holiday Beach Club in Waretown. After a moving visit to Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, Larsen finally decided to become an American citizen in 2000. He was predeceased by his parents, Knut and Margaret Larsen, in 1994 and 2005, respectively.

He is survived by his wife of more than 57 years, Janet; a son, Erik; his daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Brian Bigum; two grandchildren, Logan and Kelsey Bigum; a sister, Rae Hunt and two brothers, Harry and Erling Larsen.
