Janet Kearns Scavo of Barnegat, NJ passed away peacefully in her home on April 19, 2023. Born in Paterson NJ, Janet grew up in North Haledon and attended Hawthorne High School. She graduated from The College of New Rochelle, and spent a month studying in Mexico.
Janet worked as a teacher in Washington, D.C. and then transitioned to social work in Paterson N.J. She was a lifelong Catholic and received her master’s degree in pastoral ministry from Caldwell College. Janet loved to travel, and took many trips, traveling to China, Hawaii, Australia, Fiji, and countless other places, always sending postcards and bringing back gifts for her nieces and nephews. Though she had no children, she was very active in the lives of her nieces, nephews, and their kids, attending their birthdays, graduations, and holy sacraments. Janet loved getting a bit of culture everywhere she went, from New Jersey to Beijing, and frequently attended plays, operas, and concerts, and explored museums and historical sites.
Janet was fiercely independent and always spoke her mind, and was also kind, forgiving, and generous. She loved to host Thanksgiving dinner with her family and friends, and had a strong lifelong bond with her sister, Barbara, and her brother-in-law, Bob. She will be dearly missed.
Janet was predeceased by her parents Helen and Earl Kearns, her husband Dominick, her sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Bob Lautenschlager and her great nephew Michael Lautenschlager. Surviving are her nephews Robert Lautenschlager (Kathleen), David Lautenschlager (Karen), niece Susan Ouano (Paul), seven great nieces and nephews, and three great great nieces.
