James Chavanne Obituary

Jimmy “Chow” Chavanne, 76, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, at Ocean University Medical Center in Brick, New Jersey, after a courageous battle with the long-term effects of Agent
Orange. Born on August 16, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the cherished son of Jules and Rosemary Chavanne. Jimmy was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1969 and served honorably in the Vietnam War. His time in Vietnam shaped a lifelong sense of service and patriotism that he proudly carried throughout his life. After his service, he built a successful career on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, working for Merrill Lynch until his retirement.

An enthusiastic fan of the New York Mets, James could often be found cheering for his favorite team or analyzing the latest trades and standings. He also loved to travel with his family and shared many unforgettable adventures in Hawaii, Aruba, and on Caribbean cruises.

Above all else, Jimmy was devoted to his family. He was the beloved husband of Linda (née Baumann) Chavanne—together they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last May.

Jimmy is survived by his wife, Linda, son, Jim, his daughter, Jeanine and her husband, Jeremy.

Jimmy’s children both carry forward his warmth, resilience, and sense of humor. One of his greatest joys was doting on his four grandchildren—Parker, Ryan, Brennan, and Matthew—whose lives he enriched with his boundless love and stories of his life experiences. He also leaves behind his youngest brother, Leo Chavanne of Broad Channel, NY. He was predeceased by his younger sisters, Jeanne Marie and Nancy, and his younger brother, Jules.

Jimmy will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to family, his pride in having served his country, and his strong faith in the values of hard work and perseverance. A celebration of his life will be
arranged at the Barnegat Funeral Home, where friends and family will gather to honor his memory.
His family extends their deepest gratitude to the dedicated medical staff at Ocean University Medical Center, as well as Concord Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, where he has received exceptional care for almost a year. Jimmy’s courage, wit, and abiding love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025 from 1 to 3:30 PM with a Blessing to begin at 3:30 PM at Barnegat Funeral Home, 841 West Bay Ave., Barnegat NJ 08005.
