Irene Zagarese-Schiller, 90, of Barnegat, NJ, passed away on Monday, August 7, 2023. She was born in the Bronx, NY to her late parents, Frederick and Euphemia Distelhurst. In 1959, she moved to Hazlet, NJ with her late husband, Anthony Zagarese, to raise her family. Irene worked many different part-time jobs to supplement the family income. She was known as the best waitress at Luigis in Hazlet.
She returned to her roots in banking until her retirement. She often referred to herself as an ex-banker and would offer banking advice if asked. She settled in Barnegat, NJ to be closer to her daughters and has been a resident for over 30 years.
After retirement, she could not sit still; so back to work she went. Everyone knew Irene as the food demonstration lady at the Manahawkin Shop Rite. Irene volunteered at Southern Ocean Medical Center, SOCH Thrift shop, Barnegat Library, and First Presbyterian Church Forked River.
Irene loved her church family at First Presbyterian Church in Forked River. She was an avid reader, was always redecorating, enjoyed telling a good story from her past, loyal Boscov’s shopper, and was heartbroken when The Christmas Tree Shops closed. She is known for her kindness, generosity, friendship, and sense of humor. Irene was a proud Scotswoman. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Raymond Schiller, two loving daughters, Elaine and husband, Frank Sicola and Lorraine and husband Earl Sieling; adored, “The Boys” Edward Verrone and David Moore; five cherished grandchildren, Michael, Gina, Daniel, Evan, and Troy; and seven great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held 10 AM on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at the Forked River Presbyterian Church, 131 North Main Street, Forked River, NJ 08731.
