Gerald Calderone Obituary

Gerald A. Calderone, M.D., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and esteemed pediatrician, passed away peacefully on June 04, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on April 1st, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the cherished son of Leo and Lena Calderone.

Gerald is survived by his devoted wife, Marybeth Calderone, and children: Karen Brenner and her husband, Andy Brenner; Robert Calderone; Ashley Caporellie and her husband, Michael Caporellie. His enduring legacy flourishes through his six adored grandchildren: Kennedy Alexander and his wife, Samantha Alexander; Bella and Bliss Brenner; Joseph Lomauro; Grace and Lucy Lena Caporellie, as well as his great-grandson, Mason Gerald Alexander.

Preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Keating, his brother Robert Calderone, and his beloved parents, Leo and Lena Calderone, Gerald’s profound impact and influence continue to echo through the lives of those he touched.

Dr. Calderone’s journey was marked by dedication and service. Despite being drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers, his passion for medicine prevailed, and he pursued his passion for healing by earning his medical degree from Jersey City Medical School.  He became an officer in the United States Navy to practice medicine and then embarked on a distinguished career as a pediatrician, caring for generations of children over four decades.  Throughout his esteemed career, Dr. Calderone served as a pillar of his profession, renowned for his expertise, empathy, and unwavering dedication to his young patients.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gerald was known for his love of horseracing, being a talented chef, and having impeccable style. As an avid enthusiast of horseracing, he found joy in the thundering hooves and exhilarating races, always cheering for his favorites with loud infectious enthusiasm. His culinary talents were celebrated among family and friends, as he delighted in cooking delicious meals that brought people together around the table. A devoted fan of the New York Yankees, Gerald reveled in the highs and lows of each season, his allegiance to the team unwavering through triumph and defeat. He loved the serenity and beauty of the Bahamas, where he loved moments of relaxation and good food and drinks with loved ones. 

Above all, Gerald treasured his roles as a father and grandfather, finding profound fulfillment in the bonds of family and the joy of creating cherished memories together. His wisdom, kindness, and gentle spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.  He took joy in witnessing the growth and happiness of his grandchildren, always finding delight in their milestones and accomplishments.

In honoring Gerald’s memory, let us remember him as a beacon of kindness, a pillar of his community, and a devoted family man. His legacy of compassion and love will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in honor of Dr. Calderone’s commitment to the well-being of children. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the love he so generously shared. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
