Frank J. Stachowicz, 85, passed away at home on the morning of Holy Thursday, following a lengthy illness. He was born to Mary Piskadlo and Frank Stachowicz in Elizabeth, NJ, where he lived until moving to the Mirage in Barnegat in 2006. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he had worked as an airplane mechanic. Known as “Frank the Mailman,” he retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 36 years of employment, primarily as a letter carrier in Hillside, NJ. Back in the day, he played baseball and basketball, and was an excellent left-handed bowler.
Frank was previously a parishioner of St. Genevieve's Church in Elizabeth and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3197 of Hillside. He enjoyed John Grisham novels, Sudoku, and from the comfort of his favorite recliner, watching Jeopardy! and any televised sport, especially the Yankees, and observing birds at his backyard trees and feeders.
Frank is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elaine (Gillen), daughters Karen of Tinton Falls, NJ and Christine of Durham, NC, son Michael of Lansdale, PA, and cousin Bernice Zembryski of Roselle, NJ.
The family is very grateful to the staff of Holy Redeemer Home Care and Hospice, and especially to Frank’s helpful and caring neighbors.
A viewing will take place Friday, April 9 from 2 to 6 pm at Barnegat Funeral Home, 841 W Bay Ave., Barnegat and a Funeral Mass will be offered Saturday, April 10 at 10:00 am in St. Mary’s Church, 747 W Bay Ave., Barnegat. (www.BarnegatFH.com)
