Dan Fongaro, 79, born on October 9, 1945 and passed peacefully on March 4, 2025, surrounded by his wife and children. He was born in Weehawken, NJ, grew up in Fort Lee, NJ and was a proud resident of Barnegat, NJ for the past 25 years.
Dan leaves behind his wife of 46 years Margaret Fongaro; his children Lisa Fongaro, Jennifer Fongaro, Alison Cortes and husband Bert, Danny Fongaro and wife Kim; his grandchildren Michael Thomas and wife Laurette, Nicholas and Ryan Cortes, Danny, Joe and Julia Fongaro; his great-grandchildren Raelynn & Karson; his sister Patricia Maus, sister-in-law Lori Casey and husband Jim; and many precious nieces and nephews. Dan’s parents, Marie & Bennett Fongaro, his mother-in-law Lottie Hackett, father-in-law Edward Hackett, his sisters Mary, Jean & Kathy, his nieces Eileen and Keri and his nephew Johnny will be happy to see his smile join them in Heaven.
Dan served in the United States Marine Corps from November 1965 through November 1967 with the 1st Battalion 9th Marines and earned a Purple Heart when he was wounded in action during Operation Liberty in Da Nang, Vietnam on June 18, 1966. Dan was also a member of the Barnegat VFW.
Dan and Maggie enjoyed their time fishing in earlier years and more recently watching sunsets at the Barnegat Municipal Dock. Dan enjoyed spending time with his children building family traditions and was an absolute treasure to his grandchildren who all admired him dearly and enjoyed playing games and hanging out in the workshop with him. Dan’s interment of ashes will take place at BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ followed by a celebration of Dan’s life. Details will be added when the arrangements are finalized.
