Carl H. Johnson

Carl Holgar Johnson, 89, of Barnegat, NJ passed on Sunday, July 19, 2026.

Carl was born one of seven children in Woburn, Massachusetts. The family
resided in Burlington, MA. He graduated Salem State Teachers College and received a
scholarship to Harvard University. Carl earned his Masters Degree in Education. Old Bridge
Township Board of Education, NJ hired him as a guidance counselor, as well as an adult night
school principal for 30 years.
He was married to the love of his life, Barbara, for 61 years, and raised four children in Howell,
NJ. Carl enjoyed kayaking, fishing, hiking, and being in the Pine Barrens. As well as being an
outdoorsman, he was a talented artist focusing on watercolor landscapes. He was a monthly
contributor for the local magazine the Mirage Messenger for 21 years. His column was called
“Among the Pines”. Carl was an avid reader of non-fiction material and you could always find
him in his favorite chair with a book.
One of his proudest accomplishments was being a grandfather to 12 college educated
granddaughters, who he loved to email more often as he got older.
Carl is predeceased by his parents, Carl and Nora Johnson, and two sisters, Josephine and
Susan.
Carl was a true renaissance man, with a continuous drive to acquire new skills and being
self-taught in many areas.
