Mary Ditmar Obituary

     Mary Patricia (Carty) Ditmar, 89, of Barnegat, NJ, formerly of Pittsfield, MA, died on Monday, October 22, 2018 at Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin, NJ after a short illness.

     Mary, daughter of the late Edward and Margaret (Donovan) Carty, was born in Pittsfield, MA on June 5, 1929.  After graduating from Dalton High School in 1947, she received a B.S. degree in education from Bowling Green State University in 1951 and a M.Ed. degree from North Adams State College (now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts) in 1970. 

      She was an elementary school teacher, primarily at Allendale School, in the Pittsfield School system for 28 years before retiring in 1988.  She subsequently worked for 5 years in the personnel department at Hillcrest Hospital before moving to New Jersey.

      She was a communicant of St. Teresa’s and Sacred Heart Church of Pittsfield and of St. Mary’s of Barnegat.  She was a longtime member of the Sacred Heart Solidarity, Friends of the Clark Museum, Christian Center Auxiliary, and Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum.  A voracious reader, keen follower of current political events and enthusiastic devotee of the Boston Red Sox, she was able to enjoy Boston’s 2018 American League championship run. 

      She is survived by her son Mark and his wife Nina of Manahawkin, New Jersey and her son Christopher of South Bend, Indiana.  She is also survived by three wonderful grandchildren (Erin, Cara and Grace Ditmar) and multiple nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her son Jeffrey, by her brothers Edward and James Carty and by her sister Joyce (Carty) Phair.

      Arrangements are under the care of the Barnegat Funeral Home.  There will be no calling hours.  A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, October 27, at 9:45 AM at St. Mary’s Church in Barnegat, NJ.  Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Dalton, MA on Tuesday, October 30, at 10:00 AM.

      In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary’s memory may be made to The Jeffrey Ditmar Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Office of Advancement, Stonehill College, 320 Washington St., Easton, MA, 02357.
