Edgardo Rick Velazquez, 81, of Barnegat passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2019. Rick was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on 13 January 1938. He was the son of Lupe and Gladys Velazquez. He grew up in Jersey City and graduated from Dickinson High School in 1955. At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was Honorably Discharged after serving four years in 1959. Shortly he enlisted in the NJ Army National Guard in 1959 and was mobilized with his unit during the Berlin Crisis 1961-1962 and Honorably Discharged as Staff Sergeant E-6. He served from 1962 until 1998 and retired as a Staff Sergeant Major E-9, after 43 years of service. Rick was predeceased by his parents, sister, and his beloved son, Mark Anthony, who served in the U.S.Army, who participated in the Persian Gulf during "Black Hawk Helicopter Down" operation in Somalia. Rick was a highly decorated Sergeant Major including, but not limited to, Army Legion of Merit, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medals for U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army, and National Defense Medal. Rick was a Federal Technician for Dept. of Defense as an Internal Review Auditor, and Administrative and Logistics Supervisor with the Challenge Youth Academy Program. He is survived by his wife, Marie, of 53 years, his daughter, Diane-Marie Junger, and son, Brian Jefferey, and niece Mary Elizabeth Toro;many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
